Communication; it is the basis of relationships. And especially as an entrepreneur you communicate a bit. But how to pass the stage of chitchatting and actually conduct a quality customer conversation, especially with a (possible) new customer? Read on, because Movements Marketing shares four tips plus a bonus for conducting a high-quality (multilingual) customer conversation!
1. Any questions?
Ask questions, but not just any questions; ask questions with which you map the working method, investments and earnings, but also their customers, uncertainties and associated fears. Once clear? Analyze the answers and come up with tailor-made answers for the customers you’re having a conversation with and use your train of thought for appropriate proposals.
2. More questions?
Do you think ‘How do I ask questions’? Easy! By asking questions. A lot. And more. Many more! Ask endless questions and remember ‘The only stupid question is an unasked question’. No matter how unimportant questions may sound to you, to get to the core of the matter, you really have to ask questions and (very important!) listen just as carefully. So shake off your fear of asking a ‘stupid’ question and remember; the key is to assume that you don’t know anything and want to understand everything: therefore don’t fill in even the most obvious answers yourself, but – you guessed it – ask them!
3. A question you said?
Gosh… more questions! But only through questions do you get your answers. So after the above points, make sure to avoid socially desirable answers. How? Instead of asking what your conversation partner expects or thinks of your product, ask your interlocutors about what they’re already doing on the topic discussed and what are their (memorable) experiences. In short: ask about their (previous) behavior and taken steps and respond to that.
4. Still a questions left?
Don’t ask questions to get the answers which you want to hear. So ask questions to actually get information. Listen as indicated earlier and keep asking. Especially if you as an entrepreneur are very passionate it’s very important to put the customer and his or her answers at number one and let go of your own ideas or assumptions. After all customer acquisition isn’t about bombarding your conversation partner but starts with listening.
Bonus tip: multilingualism wins!
Obviously it isn’t always possible, but if it is invest in multilingualism; considering colleagues and yourself. Especially if you serve a certain market in a certain area. The reason behind this is surprisingly simple but effective. As soon as you can communicate with customers in a language of their own and/or one they feel comfortable with, the communication will also be taken to another level and the chance of possible miscommunications is reduced.
